DOES IT MAKE SENSE TO MAKE HASHISH AT HOME? FIND OUT IF IT MAKES SENSE AND HOW TO DO IT
In addition to cannabis buds (or CBD bud) and CBD oil, one of the most popular marijuana derivatives is undoubtedly hashish.
Hashish is the resin of the plant, a very cannabinoid-rich substance, flavours, and fragrances and has been used worldwide since ancient times.
If you’ve read a bit of this product here and there, you’ve probably got a question: is it possible to make hashish at home?
And if so, is this an advantageous option?
Here is all the information you need to know about home-made hashish, the methods of making it and the risks involved.
How is hashish made? The main home-made methods
If we want to summarise the production of hash in a few words, we can say that this product is made by separating the trichomes from the buds of cannabis or CBD weed (depending on the product you want to make).
The trichome powder obtained, called kief, is then pressed and, almost always, heated and then processed into resin pellets or balls.
Making this product is simple and, theoretically, can also be done at home.
There are three prominent (but not the only) methods that you can use to make your hashish, although each of these is subject to certain variables.
Let’s find out more about them below.
One of the main methods used to make home-made hash, for simplicity, is to rub the fresh buds between your hands in the first step.
After washing your hands thoroughly, you take a cannabis bud (from which the leaves have been removed) and roll it gently between your palms. The secret to gleaning more resin, and avoiding trapping plant residues in it, is to twirl the bud without exerting too much pressure.
It will create a film of black resin, which can be shaped into balls once peeled off. The resulting hashish is called ‘charas’.
Another home-made method of making hash, which is also the most widely used globally, is to sift the dried and frozen marijuana buds.
In this case, the time required to make kief and then hashish is much longer, and you will need some equipment to do this, but the yield is greater.
First, you put a sheet of baking paper on a work surface and place the sieve on top of it (a fine mesh screen printing frame is perfect), on top of which you will spread the tops and other plant waste (leaves, twigs, etc.).
By moving the small parts of the plant over the mesh, the trichomes will start to break off and fall down.
The amount of kief that should be obtained with this method is, on average, about one-tenth of the sieved plant components. Once this is achieved, the pollen powder should be pressed firmly to create a lump.
Water, ice, and a blender
In addition to the above, another system can be used to make hash directly in the kitchen at home, and this involves using a blender.
First, the plant components are put into the blender, then water and ice cubes are added, and the motor is turned on.
The mixture is then poured into a glass jar using a sieve.
When the mixture is allowed to stand, sediment will form at the bottom of the jar.
At this stage, the excess water must be poured off, taking care not to move the resin at the bottom, and then the jar must be filled with new ice water, and the same operation carried out at least once more.
Finally, the resin obtained should be filtered through a coffee filter to remove all the excess water and left to dry thoroughly before use.
Home-made hashish: the risks outweigh the benefits
As we have seen, there are methods of making hash at home (although we have only briefly described three of the main techniques above), but for many reasons, self-production is not a good idea at all.
First, you have to consider that it is forbidden to grow hemp or hemp light in Switzerland, to possess large quantities of it, and to make products from the plant.
Therefore, making hashish at home is to commit an offence that is also punishable under criminal law.
If you want to make hashish at home, you either have to grow the plants first (putting yourself at risk for a long time), or you have to buy them, again risking being caught in the act.
And then there is the production period: even an indiscreet glance from neighbours who are against the practice can be enough to endanger the new hashish producers.
Apart from the legality issue, which should already be enough to discourage enterprising hashish enthusiasts, there are other aspects to consider.
Although producing hashish is not very complicated, it takes a bit of practice and, therefore, a lot of time to obtain quality products.
In addition, it should be noted that it is more difficult to make different types of hashish at home; however, buying hashish in specialised stores has the advantage that you have more variety, and you can be sure that you only have CBD products at home.
The idea of making home-made hashish in Switzerland is not a good one at all: the risks and disadvantages far outweigh the benefits.
