As early as 1941, Henry Ford designed the first \u2018Hemp Car<\/strong>\u2018, a car almost entirely made of hemp-derived materials, but although it was an innovative project, it failed to take off.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
The reasons for this have always been that, at the time marijuana was considered \u2018dangerous\u2019, so cultivation was frowned upon, and a boom in\u00a0petroleum-based products<\/strong>\u00a0coincided: cannabis was a hindrance to the projects of a very powerful niche.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

According to engineer Armstrong, a material made from hemp has now been created that\u00a0surpasses fibreglass and other materials<\/strong>\u00a0most commonly used in the automotive sector in terms of strength, price, and performance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
To make it short, it\u2019s a real\u00a0revolution\u00a0<\/strong>compared to the past.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
What has changed is the way the fibre is used.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Whereas in the past hemp fibres were used in \u2018free\u2019 form or in the form of an absorbent mat, the solution has been found in\u00a0woven fibres<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
What does it change?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
In previous tests, the hemp fibres literally ended up sucking up all the resin in the compound, making it necessary to use a larger quantity, and resin is precisely the most expensive material.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
In the case of using hemp in the form of a \u201cmat\u201d, on the other hand, the pieces obtained were irregular and full of protuberances.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The fact that the fibres are woven very tightly means that absorption problems are eliminated, and the resulting material\u00a0is smooth and particularly strong<\/strong>, more so than fibreglass.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Growing one acre of legal hemp can produce a much\u00a0larger quantity of biomass than growing<\/strong>\u00a0other fibres (up to 30,000 pounds per acre).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Hemp also produces a\u00a0much stronger and harder fibre<\/strong>\u00a0than other plants, especially when grown in cold and windy areas such as Canada (Armstrong\u2019s country).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
As far as the price of the material is concerned, it is still high at the moment because the process is going like this: the hemp\u00a0is shipped from Canada to Europe<\/strong>\u00a0(where there is a company that makes this particular woven hemp) and then from Europe, the woven fibres are sent back.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
The goal of the San Diego-based car manufacturer in collaboration with Armstrong is to be able to make the investment that would allow to process the fibres directly on-site,\u00a0lowering prices by up to half or even a quarter<\/strong>\u00a0compared to glass fibre.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
This possibility seems to be achievable\u00a0within five years<\/strong>, and if it is, hemp will certainly take over.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
